bridging work permit

Bridging Open Work Permit

The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) allows Immigrants, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to keep working while their applications for permanent residencies are getting processed.

The BOWP came into existence for applicants of certain permanent residence programs who had a valid work status in Canada but their work permit would expire before a decision on their Permanent Residence could be declared. Such nominations would benefit from a work permit to ‘bridge’ the gap between the expiration of their current work permit and their permanent residence status.

Eligibility of Applicants for BOWP?

  • Must be currently residing in Canada.
  • Should have valid temporary resident status in Canada and hold a valid work permit.
  • Should be eligible to restore their temporary resident status with authorization to work on a work permit.
  • Select “Open Work Permit” as the type of work permit being applied for payment for both the work permit processing fee and BOWP holder fee.

The BOWP application will be null if the Permanent Residence application is rejected or incomplete. In such a case the processing fee will not be refunded. Previously, BOWP had to wait until their current work permit was within four months of expiration before applying — this time constraint was removed in 2021.
